Solution

My concept for a cleaner Yahoo homepage

After breaking down the problems, I sketched and documented a redesigned homepage that focuses on hierarchy, balance, and a more modern style.

Wireframe concept for a redesigned Yahoo homepage

Layout changes

  • A large hero area for the main story and one or two featured articles.
  • Secondary content moved below the fold and grouped by category.
  • Cleaner two-column layout with a clear primary content column.

Visual style

  • Softer background color to separate content from the edges.
  • Consistent type scale and fewer font variations.
  • Yahoo purple used as a focused accent color, not everywhere.

Navigation & options

  • Primary nav focused on core areas: News, Mail, Finance, Sports, More.
  • Secondary features accessible through drawers or tabs instead of always-on widgets.
  • Clear call-to-action buttons for signing in and starting sessions.

Before vs. after

Area Original Redesign
Clutter Multiple sidebars, boxes, and widgets competing for attention. Cleaner layout with a single main focus area and organized sections.
Color Bland background with inconsistent accents. Subtle background tint and purposeful accent color usage.
Typography Many different fonts and sizes on the same screen. Consistent type scale with clear hierarchy.
Overall feel Outdated, busy, and hard to scan. Modern, focused, and easier to read at a glance.

Next steps

If I continued this project, I would translate the wireframe into a coded prototype, test it with users, and adjust the layout based on what people actually click and read. I would also explore dark-mode variations and more personalization on the homepage.
