Different fonts and too many images

Another issue I identified was the inconsistent typography across different sections of the Yahoo homepage. Headlines, links, and widgets often use noticeably different styles, which makes the page feel unorganized and inconsistent.

On top of that, there are a lot of images and visual cues packed into the screen. Thumbnails, icons, and promotional graphics all compete for attention and distract from the headlines.

Example of mixed fonts and many thumbnails on Yahoo

Typography problems

  • Multiple font styles on the same screen.
  • Inconsistent sizes and weights for similar content types.
  • Lack of a clear type hierarchy from main story to minor links.

Image overload

Images are useful for grabbing attention, but when every module has a thumbnail, the effect wears off. It becomes difficult to try and navigate around the website.

Improvement idea

  • Pick a small, consistent type scale for headings and body text.
  • Reserve large images for the main story and a few featured items.
  • Use icons sparingly and only when they add meaning, not decoration.
